Can I mix units from Vamos and Somos?

Modified on Fri, 14 Feb at 7:31 PM

Yes. While the vocabulary in each curriculum (Vamos, Somos) builds from unit to unit, the topics in each unit are separate. For that reason, it is possible to mix and match units during the school year. However, the teacher must be careful to choose units that will be understandable to their students based on vocabulary knowledge.

Somos and Vamos do not completely align in terms of core vocabulary, so Vamos 1-10 is not a substitute for Somos 1-10. Beginning in Somos 1 Unit 8, most of the core structures you see in the Somos units are not addressed in Vamos. Even still, we recommend that teachers start with earlier units of Somos as a form of scaffolding. Even if the units are working with core vocabulary that is familiar to students, the content will be new (new stories, new cultural topics, etc.), and so the communication will be novel. Students who have completed a course with Vamos will likely be able to communicate about the content at a higher level of performance, and you'll have the added benefit of supporting any student who may enter your program in the 8th grade year without having taken a full year of Spanish previously.

Use this alignment document for suggested sequencing. There are two guides included: one for teachers primarily following Somos who want to use units from Vamos, and one for teachers primarily using Vamos who want to use units from Somos.
