Can I Skip Somos Units?

Modified on Mon, 8 May, 2023 at 1:11 PM

Because the curriculum spirals so much vocabulary, most teachers find that they are able to skip after around Somos 1, Unit 10 or Unit 11; some teachers choose to start skipping after Somos 1, Unit 8, but really it is up to you!

Remember that you are the expert for your context, and keep in mind that if you do choose to skip, it's worth carefully looking through all the materials for the new unit to make sure that students understand everything!

Here are some comments from experienced Somos teachers about skipping units:

"I tried skipping around some in my level 1 and 2 class, and it ended up being hard because the vocabulary spirals so much, that they constantly came upon words from previous units they had not acquired, and it slowed down comprehension of the new material and was frustrating to the students."

"If I skip I usually still have them to target structures in their picture dictionaries and the slide practice. Then maybe a reading that uses them. 2 days total."

"Because SOMOS spirals and builds upon itself, it is recommended to go in order.
However at my school we choose to skip a unit or two is SOMOS 1 to use with the Spanish 3 classes as they cover more intense topics that can be expanded on with other authentic texts and resources. When I skip a unit, I use supplemental materials from the Collab Drive to ensure that students have enough support and input for the next unit."

"I haven't had good experiences entirely skipping units. What I do instead is limit activities. So a two week unit might be reduced to 4 days"
