Yes, The Somos Curriculum meets Utah's World Language Standards..


Every learner will use a world language, in addition to English, to engage in meaningful, intercultural communication, understand and interpret the spoken and written language, and present information, concepts and ideas in local and global communities. Through learning the language, they will gain an understanding of the perspectives of other cultures and compare the language and cultures learned with their own.

Language Competencies 

The Somos Curriculum is proficiency-oriented and designed to encourage growth in proficiency through engagement in communicative activities in class. 

1. Interpretive Listening (IL) and Reading (IR)

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to be able to interpret information, concepts, and ideas from a variety of culturally authentic sources on a variety of topics.

2. Interpersonal Communication (IC)

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to be able to exchange information, concepts, and ideas with a variety of speakers or readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context.

3. Presentational Speaking (PS) and Writing (PW)

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to be able to present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context.

Intercultural Competencies

The Somos Curriculum is culture-focused and creates opportunities for students to examine products, practices, and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures and individuals and to reflect on their own.

4. Investigation of Cultural Products and Practices (CPP)

The Somos Curriculum creates opportunities for students to use their language skills to investigate the world beyond my immediate environment.

5. Understanding of Cultural Perspectives (CP)

The Somos Curriculum creates opportunities for studeents to use their language skills to recognize and understand others’ ways of thinking as well as their own.

6. Participation in Cultural Interaction (CIA)

The Somos Curriculum creates opportunities for students to use their language skills and cultural understanding to interact in a cultural context other than their own.
