Yes, The Somos Curriculum meets the World Languages (WL) Standards for California Public Schools.


WLSCPS COMMUNICATION STANDARDS

WL.CM1 Communication Standard 1: Interpretive Communication

Each unit in The Somos Curriculum provides students with opportunities to understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics, from authentic texts. They use technology, when appropriate, to access information.

WL.CM2 Communication Standard 2: Interpersonal Communication

Each unit in The Somos Curriculum prepares students to interact and negotiate meaning in a variety of real-world settings and for multiple purposes, in spoken, signed, or written conversations, and to use technology in order to collaborate, to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.

WL.CM3 Communication Standard 3: Presentational Communication

Each unit in The Somos Curriculum provides students with opportunities to present information, concepts, and ideas on a variety of topics and for multiple purposes, in culturally appropriate ways, as well as to consider how to adapt to various audiences of listeners, readers, or viewers, using the most suitable media and technologies to present and publish. 

WL.CM4 Communication Standard 4: Settings for Communication 

Through the scope of The Somos Curriculum, students move from using language in highly predictable common daily settings, to transactional, informal, and formal settings (Intermediate/Advanced). Students also move from recognizing to participating and initiating (Intermediate/Advanced) language use opportunities outside the classroom. The Somos Curriculum creates opportunities for students to set goals while reflecting on progress, and allows them to use language for enjoyment, enrichment, and advancement.

WL.CM5 Communication Standard 5: Receptive Structures in Service of Communication

Each unit in The Somos Curriculum creates opportunities for students to communicate in receptive modes not only with sounds, parameters, writing systems, and basic word and sentence formation, but with text structures for paragraph-level discourse (Advanced) and in some major time frames. Students interpret discourse with learned words, phrases, sentences, strings of sentences, and paragraphs and strings of paragraphs (Advanced).

WL.CM6 Communication Standard 6: Productive Structures in Service of Communication

Each unit in The Somos Curriculum creates opportunities for students to communicate in productive modes not only with sounds, parameters, writing systems, and basic word and sentence formation, but with text structures for paragraph-level discourse (Advanced) and in some major time frames. Students produce discourse with learned words, phrases, sentences, strings of sentences, and paragraphs (Advanced).

WL.CM7 Communication Standard 7: Language Comparisons in Service of Communication

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to interact with communicative competence, using the target language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the nature of language through comparisons of similarities and differences in the target language and the language(s) they know.

WL.CL1 Cultures Standard 1: Culturally Appropriate Interaction 

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to interact with cultural competence and understanding.

WL.CL2 Cultures Standard 2: Cultural Products, Practices, and Perspectives 

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to interact with cultural competence, demonstrating understanding and using the target language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationships among the products cultures produce, the practices cultures manifest, and the perspectives that underlie them.

WL.CL3 Cultures Standard 3: Cultural Comparisons 

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to interact with cultural competence, using the target language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the nature of culture through comparisons of similarities and differences in the target cultures and the culture(s) they know. 

WL.CL4 Cultures Standard 4: Intercultural Influences

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to interact with intercultural competence, demonstrating understanding and using the target language to investigate how cultures influence each other over time.


WLSCPS CONNECTIONS STANDARDS

WL.CN1 Connections Standard 1:  Connections to Other Disciplines 

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to function in real-world situations, academic, and career-related settings, by building, reinforcing, and expanding their knowledge of other disciplines using the target language to develop critical thinking and solve problems. 

 WL.CN2 Connections Standard 2: Diverse Perspectives and Distinctive Viewpoints 

The Somos Curriculum prepares students to function in real-world situations in academic and career-related settings, by creating opportunities for students to access and evaluate information and diverse perspectives that are readily or only available through the language and its cultures.
